Over 500 years old, Lord Narasimha temple is located at the foot of Yaanamalai Hills near Madurai .
The unique speciality of this temple is thevaishnava divya desam Perumal of Thiru Mogur “Kaalamegha Perumal” makes his annual trip to this temple on ( March ) Maasi Pournami to enact Gajendra Moksham episode .
The temple is located 8kms East of Madurai near the Melur Highway Road and 4 kms North of the Thiru Moghur Kaalamegha Perumal Divya Desam at the foot of the huge Yaanaimalai (elephant hill) is the Yoga Narasimha temple in Narasingam .
This place is referred to as the Gaja Giri Kshetram and this temple is known as ‘Kodavarai Koil’ signifying the construction of the temple by breaking the huge piece of rock.
Going by the inscriptions seen inside the main (Moolavar) Sannidhi, this temple may date back over 500 years. Legend says the great saint Roma Maha Rishi approached Sage Narada for performing Tapas at that holy place .
Narada asked him to take a dip in the Sakkara Theertha and undertake penance at Padma Thadagam, a place filled completely with lotus flowers. He performed a Sathra Maha Yagna to invoke the blessings of Lord Narasimha , Lord pleased with his prayers appeared before the saint in a Gigantic form in an Ugra Kolam.
Worried about the presence of Lord Narasimha in this ‘Ugra’ form, All the the Devas went to Brahma for solution. Brahma invited Bhaktha Prahalada to come to this place and glorify Lord Narasimha. Finally the story goes that it was the presence of Goddess Maha Lakshmi could pacify Lord Narasimha down and the two of them are said to have blessed Romasi Rishi .
Varada Narasimha, the processional deity ( Utsavar) , is seen in a standing posture with a abundant compassion to all devotees and a special pose not seen elsewhere.
One more important place to be seen is the VedaNarayana temple in Kodikulam which is east of this temple is the VedaNarayana temple in Kodikulam where Pilla Lokacharya is said to have brought and kept Lord Namperumal of Srirangam in safety during the Muslim Invasion at Srirangam.
Pillai Lokacharya is said to have attained srivaikuntam from this place .
